Robert Dick Wilson, the great Princeton Seminary Old Testament scholar who died in 1930, was well practiced in exposing and refuting error in matters of Biblical studies. In one of his writings, he insisted on the importance of tracing every error back to its original source. His research had convinced him that almost invariably any commonly-held but false view could be traced back to a single writer, and that this error had become widespread, not because other writers had independently investigated the same evidence and arrived at the same conclusions, but merely because other writers were lazy and simply parroted the conclusions of the first writer. In short, the false conclusions were naively adopted and the evidence ignored.  Continue reading

The Christian in Romans 7 / Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952)

In this chapter the apostle does two things:

First, he shows what is not and what is the Law’s relation to the believer—judicially, the believer is emancipated from the curse or penalty of the Law (7:1-6); morally, the believer is under bonds to obey the Law (vv. 22, 25). Secondly, he guards against a false inference being drawn from what he had taught in chapter 6. In 6:1-11 he sets forth the believer’s identification with Christ as “dead to sin.” (vv. 2, 7, etc.) Then, from v. 11 onwards, he shows the effect this truth should have upon the believer’s walk. In chapter 7 he follows the same order of thought. In 7:1-6 he treats of the believer’s identification with Christ as “dead to the law” (see vv. 4, 6). Then, from v. 7 onwards he describes the experiences of the Christian. Thus the first half of Rom. 6 and the first half of Rom. 7 deal with the believer’s standing, whereas the second half of each chapter treats of the believer’s state; but with this difference: the second half of Rom. 6 reveals what our state ought to be, whereas the second half of Rom. 7 (vv. 13-25) shows what our state actually is. The False Doctrine of SINLESS PERFECTION / Bob L. Ross

The devil has deceived people in many ways and with many false doctrines, and the heresy of sinlessness in the flesh is one of them. Not many communities have escaped this heresy, and I am sure that wherever you may live, some false teacher has come along to propagate this doctrine. In fact, from the pulpit, over the radio, and on television, people are subjected to this heresy all over the world.

In view of the widespread area this false doctrine has permeated, we deem it wise to refute this heresy with the Word of God, in order to establish God’s people in the truth.

When One Is Saved

First of all, let us notice what happens when a sinner is saved. In Ephesians 2:1, we read, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”

This verse teaches us that a person becomes alive spiritually when he is saved. Note, too, that before being saved, the person was “dead” spiritually. Not dead physically; the flesh wasn’t dead; but “dead” spiritually. Now when the sinner is saved, he becomes “alive” spiritually. This has nothing to do with the old flesh, but with inner spiritual life in Christ. The flesh has been alive all along. Now the soul is quickened to life, or united to Christ’s life.

Notice another verse in John 6:63-“It is the Spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing.” Here we are taught that God’s Spirit is the Agent who “quickens” a sinner to spiritual life, and that the flesh is profitless. The flesh is absolutely unprofitable in every respect. It is carnal, not spiritual. Continue reading

THE FALSE GOD AND GOSPEL OF MORAL GOVERNMENT THEOLOGY

By E. Calvin Beisner (Christian Research Institute)

Summary

Moral government theology (MGT), rooted in the philosophical definition of freedom as the “power of contrary choice,” denies the fundamental Christian doctrines of God’s perfection in knowledge, goodness, and power; original sin; human moral inability; the substitutionary satisfaction of God’s justice in Christ’s atoning death; redemption; and justification by the crediting of Christ’s righteousness to believers by grace through faith apart from works. As documented in this article, these denials are unbiblical and are so serious as to warrant classifying MGT as non-Christian.

Judy was a former missionary whose faith had collapsed; she no longer believed that God was unchangeably good or faithful or that He even knew all of the future. George (both names have been changed) was another former missionary who ardently rejected the historic belief that Adam’s sin and guilt are shared in by the whole human race. What tied the two together? Both had been taught the same doctrinal system in training with a popular youth mission organization in the 1970s. In one, it brought depression; in the other, pride. Both effects, strangely enough, were fitting.

Since the 1960s, a new heretical theology has been infiltrating evangelical circles. Not officially embraced by any well-known denomination or parachurch organization, the system has nevertheless made serious inroads into at least one large and well-known missions organization and has spawned a ministry and publication dedicated to its promotion and defense.1 This system of doctrine is paradoxically old and new: its elements are old,2 but the manner in which they are tied together into a complete structure is new.

THE RISE OF MORAL GOVERNMENT THEOLOGY

The system’s major proponents dub it moral government theology. But today’s moral government theology is a far cry from what went by that name two centuries ago, when people as diverse as Jonathan Edwards (a firm Calvinist) and John Wesley (a firm Arminian) both used it to refer to God’s government of moral agents through His moral law as contrasted with His government of the physical creation through physical law.
