SICKNESS / J.C. Ryle (1816 – 1900)

“He whom Thou lovest is sick.”-John 11:3
The chapter from which this text is taken is well known to all Bible readers. In life-like description, in touching interest, in sublime simplicity, there is no writing in existence that will bear comparison with that chapter. A narrative like this is to my own mind one of the great proofs of the inspiration of Scripture. When I read the story of Bethany, I feel “There is something here which the infidel can never account for.”-“This is nothing else but the finger of God.”  Continue reading

FORMALITY | J.C. Ryle

“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” —2 Timothy 3:5

“He is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: but he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”—Romans 2:28-29

The texts which head this page deserve serious attention at any time. But they deserve especial notice in this age of the church and world. Never since the Lord Jesus Christ left the earth was there so much formality and false profession as there is in the present day. Now, if ever, we ought to examine ourselves, and search our religion, that we may know of what sort it is. Let us try to find out whether our Christianity is a thing of form or a thing of heart.  Continue reading

The Sin of Hypocrisy | L.R. Shelton Jr.

More excellent literature here Chapel Library

Today we come into your home with a message on another sin which is fast bringing man to the brink of damnation and judgment: THE SIN OF HYPOCRISY. I want you to pay particular attention to this one! I have cried unto the Lord to let me deliver it with a broken heart; I have cried all week for His Word, so I trust you will listen.

I believe the judgment of God is fast coming upon the vast multitudes in Christendom today because of the lukewarmness and hypocrisy that is so manifest in the lives of those who claim to be followers of Christ. There has never been a day in the history of the church when seemingly there has been more profession and less practice of godliness than is witnessed in our churches today. Every form of the media proclaims the fact that more people claim to be “born again,” and more people claim to be followers of Christ today than at any other time in the history of the Christian church. There are more Bible study groups, prayer groups, retreats, seminars, singing and preaching groups scattered around the country than at any other time. Continue reading

Love Not the World | L. R. Shelton, Jr.

DEAR FRIEND, a false gospel is sweeping our land, and has swept like wild fire through Christendom in these last decades, damning more souls to hell than seemingly any other of Satan’s subtle lies; and I’ve come again to warn you of this FALSE GOSPEL OF CARNAL CHRISTIANITY. In our past messages, we have been showing the fruits that grow on the tree of this false gospel as they are described in II Tim. 3:1-7. We have seen from v. 5 that these fruits are manifested in the lives of those who have a “form of godliness, but deny the power thereof;” so these are not worldlings, but professors, converts of this false gospel that deny the power of the grace of God to break the power of sin. Consequently, their fruits are the fruits of the flesh, for they have never been born again of the Spirit of God. We have seen first that their behavior is all wrong, described by the words and expressions: “blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, traitors, and heady.” Second, their opinion is all wrong, described under the words and expressions: “boasters, proud, high-minded and despisers of those that are good.” Third, their affection is all wrong, described by the words and expressions: “without natural affection, lovers of their own selves, covetous, and lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” Continue reading

The Need for Truth

I would like to speak to you today about the importance of the use of literature in the church, for evangelism, for instruction in Christian truth, for devotion, and for its role in planting churches.

Protestants, in particular, are very weak in the proper use of literature to spread God’s truth. We still do not remember the words of Daniel Webster who said:

‘If religious books are not widely circulated among the masses in this country, I do not know what is going to become of us as a nation. If truth be not diffused, error will be; if God and His Word are not known and received, the devil and his works will gain the ascendancy; if the evangelical volume does not reach every hamlet, the pages of a corrupt and licentious literature will; if the power of the Gospel is not felt throughout the length and breadth of the land, anarchy and misrule, degradation and misery, corruption and darkness, will reign without mitigation or end.’  Continue reading

The Duties of Parents / J.C. Ryle

“Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he
is old, he will not depart from it.”—Prov 22:6.

I suppose that most professing Christians are acquainted with the text at the head of this page. The sound of it is probably familiar to your ears, like an old tune. It is likely you have heard it, or read it, talked of it, or quoted it, many a time. Is it not so?

But, after all, how little is the substance of this text regarded! The doctrine it contains appears scarcely known, the duty it puts before us seems fearfully seldom practised. Reader, do I not speak the truth?

It cannot be said that the subject is a new one. The world is old, and we have the experience of nearly six thousand years to help us. We live in days when there is a mighty zeal for education in every quarter. We hear of new schools rising on all sides. We are told of new systems, and new books for the young, of every sort and description. And still for all this, the vast majority of children are manifestly not trained in the way they should go, for when they grow up to man’s estate, they do not walk with God. Continue reading

THE SUPERIOR ACCURACY OF THE NKJV TO THE KJV’S TEXTUS RECEPTUS: A Study of the Synoptic Gospels | Gary Hudson

The King James Only movement was initially based upon a “defense of the Textus Receptus” (sometimes erroneously referred to as “the Majority Text”) Greek texts used for the KJV New Testament. Up until the early 1980s, books by David Otis Fuller (editor), Jasper James Ray, Donald A. Waite, and Edward F. Hills popularized the KJO view mainly upon a “TR-only” basis. (To this day, the King James Only Controversy remains largely a New Testament controversy). The fact that virtually every other English translation (RV, ASV, NASB, NEB, etc.) was based upon a critical edition of the Greek New Testament made it convenient for KJO advocates to discard them all in favor of “the only translation based upon the uncorrupted text,” allegedly, the Textus Receptus.  Continue reading

WHAT IS KING JAMES ONLYISM? | Gary Hudson

King James Only, first of all, does not necessarily refer to those who have made the King James Version their preferred or exclusive choice of English Bible translation. KJVO neither necessarily refers to those who believe the KJV is the “best” English translation and/or remains unsurpassed.

Simply stated, King James Onlyism is the belief that ONLY the King James Version is “the Word of God in English.” The claim is stated in a variety of terms, e.g., “the preserved Word of God,” “God’s preserved Word for the English-speaking people,” “The AV 1611,” etc. The belief is usually characteristic of the following tenets:  Continue reading

IS YOUR MODERN TRANSLATION CORRUPT? | Dr. James R. White

More information here Alpha & Omega Ministries

Summary

King James Version Only advocates argue that all modern translations of the New Testament are based on Greek manuscripts that contain intentional doctrinal corruptions. However, an examination of the most important manuscripts underlying these translations demonstrates that such charges are based more upon prejudice than fact. The papyri finds of the last century, together with the great uncial texts from the fourth and fifth centuries A.D., do not deprecate the deity of Christ, the Trinity, or salvation by grace through faith. Modern translations, such as the NIV and NASB, are not “corrupt” but instead trustworthy and useful translations of the Word of God. Continue reading
